Question 2
Question 2
For our main video our target audience is the younger generation who is into their rap/RnB genre. This is what we based our video on, on how young people try achieve goals but having major distractions around them such as bully’s and girls. Our websites audience is for anyone who is interested in knowing more about our artists, we give information about the artist, his background and career. We also show tour dates and just for the fans, merchandise that can be purchased. Meeting our artist’s fans expectations were easily done, we just had to come up with an idea that’s never been done but that affects a vast majority of young pupils in the UK. We utilised our star that was angle, we did this successfully as we showed a lot of him in our music video, and we continuously went back to angles performance shots. We utilised our main star within both website and dig pack, for the website he was continuously the background and main page, we also included an ‘about’ page about angle. For my dig pack he was the face of all covers. Our main product was never done by any other artist however you could say it was similar in ways that the story is about someone who is trying to reach personal goals but having obstacles that are stopping him/her. We have maintained brand and star image throughout the unit. We have shown who is our main artist and our featuring artist, it is clear on who is which. We made sure in our music video; we introduce our artist before our story characters. The body movement and hand gestures show that these two are our performers.
Narrative structure
Our narrative structure followed the pattern of all RnB/ rap music videos, how it comes from performance shots to story line shots, we kept within real time and when we moved from day to day, we showed a clear indication from the different cloths that the main characters were wearing. Our music video was successfully in synced with our sound track; we even fit the audio words to our story line. For example when the singer says ‘struggle’ we show the main character struggling. due to our genre and audience the tastes are towards a more conventional narrative and music video, and this is exactly what we have done. Looking at Tzvetan Todorov theory that in every music video there are three phases, to begin with an equilibrium(The girl being an attraction towards the main bullied guy); then something happens to create a disequilibrium(the guy approaching with the girl is bullied, De-motivated in other aspects such as the music); which is then resolved in some way to create a new equilibrium(the girl motivates the main guy, bully finally respects the guy for his music and the main guys gets the girl at the end. The protagonist in this video is the life of Angle, being represented by another character (Ashad) and also respectfully the Antagonist is the bully (Fahad).
So our Music video is working in a linear fashion, with all the clips of the narrative and plot in line one after the other simultaneously. Although if we had broken the rule and the general conventions than we would have produced a non-linear sequence, with random pieces, the plot and narrative not in line, not sequence after sequence often with techniques such as; Cross cutting, Flashbacks, Parallel and Enigma Codes.

As spoken about before the Star image is important for the audience as seen in the video, he seems to start low and than slowly rises within fame and the people who he struggles with, he finally is clear and has fixed his issues wit. Similarly the meta-narrative is very important, although this is the life overall, the video we have created in a way gives a glimpse of the brim of of his life and how his life has improved and what he has gone through, the battles faced and reached where he is now.
Finally the editing and Camera work, this combines with the other tasks as there are lot of conventions followed from the general music video that, do relate to our music video. They relate through conventions set by Goodwin and Vernallis, such as the pace of the movement, in our genre the movement needs to be quick, a lot of shots and clips in a short period of time , with generous time given to the narrative to show and explain properly to the viewer what is going. Also not all conventions were fully conformed some have been broken slightly, due to the nature of the song and genre, such as there being be a certain pace to editing usually in line with the beat, but fro us we did follow this but not always, keeping the narrative the focus and finally like said before there is the fast cutting to keep it moving and, this helps our audience keep their interest in the video, possibly helping to watch it again, watching it more detail the next time.

shooting
We had one of our important locations tested and footage some of this footage could possibly be used for the final video. This location was the rooftop of a car park on New Malden high street. We have thought of some very good ideas, for the final video, in addition we had previously learnt the importance of cut-away and saw a major opportunity to shoot some at the rooftop, we had learnt this from our research where we could see a lot of cut-away's used which allowed to let the viewer piece by piece create the location.
We had also learnt something very important to look out for whilst doing this shoot which was about the; the lighting, which could show your shadow, in addition is the, camera angle and where the camera is facing.
You may just be able to see the shadow on the bottom left, this was one of the problems we realised instantly, the cameraman needs to be placed in accordance with the artist but somewhere the artist is not deeply effected by the natural light or the camera and the cameraman is not effected, finding this position was difficult but, in the end we were able to good shots. We were able to find angles where neither would be effected, examples of this are shown below.

logo
This logo, is specifically aimed at Angle our main artist. Keeping the main theme of music, there are headphones around the name, the name being in graffiti, due to the culture and the background of the artist.
This logo is for the production company, keeping it simple but, having the consistency with the Angle font, this style is an attractive, attention seeking.
album art
this is an album art made for the famous Michael jackson. as you can see it illustrates his whole career from an early age till his peak. the largest image is oh him as a king, this is because he was seen as a king from many eyes. his music touched millions of fans. there are about 40 small images within this one image of Michael. a lot of royal dark colours were used to make this.

artist research wretch 32
i chose to research wretch 32 as we are remaking his featuring music video, this will let us understand his background and what kind of character he is. his real name was Jermaine Sinclair and was born 9 March 1985, we know him as his stage name Wretch 32. Jermaine is an English rapper and former Grime MC from Tottenham. wretch grew up in London, he was a son of a local reggae DJ in the Tiverton Estate. Wretch 32 got his first big break when he performed at the first annual MP3 Music Awards in 2007. After performing at MMA 2007, his album was released. his clothe style is either very casual or the London gangster look, this style he grew up with.
group work diary
i have made logos for the group. you can find the images i made on the group blog. i made a logo for both artist 'angel and 'wrench 23' and our production name 'even edits production'. i used bubble writing for both artist as it fits in with their personalty, the gangster/rap background, then for the production name i made it look quite formal as it is an organisation.
angel's music video
i have chosen to analyse 'angel when i go in' music video. this is also the video my group are re-making.
the music video starts of various 1 seconds shots then long shots to medui9m shots to both artist, this is to introduce both artist. there are panning shots of them and canera shots where the canera is free held and waved mjotin to the artist, this is because of the rythem of the song it is so fast paced. camera shots need to follow the beat. throught out the whole miusic video, the camera never stops moving, no still shots. the camera moves very freely. there are a lot of panning shots, high and low shots. i woulkd describe the camera shots were all over the place but works very effectively.

audience feedback
we had a lot of positive feed back when showing a group of students our work. some negative points were made:
- 'some clips were shaky'
- 'add more few seconds clips'
- 'use more cut aways'
- 'use more story line'
students couldn't wait till our music video was finished, we took in all the feed back and we made changes to our music video. however when our department was burgled, we had to start again. this was very time consuming and considering we were nearly finished our music video then been told to start again, we just didn't have the same drive we had at the start.

on this date we filmed our story line shots, the setting was coombe girls school where we used classrooms, corridors and playground. we needed this setting as our story line was is based in a school environment. we filmed a lot that day and had some great shots, shots included characters of our story.

we went to kingston where we found a great car park for scenery, we used this car park to film our performance shots of main singer harris. this went really well, we took very good shots that we included in our final cut. one major issue when filing was the weather, weather was very windy and the sun came in and out, we noticed this when importing our clips. the wind made us very cold whilst filming and we found it hard to use the camera free hand.
diary
unfortunately our school department had burglars, where they stole our macs and cameras, this was devastating. all our work was lost and we had to start again. luckily we had an extension so we did have a little more time to do our work, however during the weeks of not having computers we had no cameras as well, this meant us not having a lot of time to film our final pieces.

website research chipmunk
i have chosen to research chipmunks website. his website is very simple and short, there is no navigation bar to navigate yourself to other pages, there is only a home page however it does give you options to buy chipmunk merchandise and to become a fan of chipmunk where you would have to make an account to log in and receive exclusive special offers on merchandise and exclusive events. there is chipmunks latest video on his homepage just like every other artist websites.
in my opinion this is not a very good website for fans, it doesn't enable fans to engage with their artist. having products like this as an known artist could loose your fans.
website research angel
The first website i have chosen to research is the artist i have chosen to re make one of his song. Angel is getting more and more famous after every song he makes.
for his website, his homepage has his logo and his famous catch phrase 'this is angel' this is printed and the front of the page, just under it, it has his latest video that plays as soon as you click into his page. if you scroll down , you can find latest pictures and videos that angel his took himself, this is a very good way with interacting with your fans, letting them know you keep in touch.
The navigation bar includes the headings home, news, music, live, gallery. this is like most artist websites where you can check their music, attend concerts, check personal pictures and find out latest news about your artist.
relation to our own production
To relation to our own production for album covers. this is what i am going to follow:
- large image of the artist
- a look/feeling from the artist that reflects the album name
- the artist name writen big and clear
- album name written in a font that stands out
- song names on the back
- artists picture within the inside

research album art tyga
This is an album art from the artist Tyga. As an artist Tyga sees himself as someone big, royal in the music industry, this is why he made this album named 'careless world, rise of the last king', his name was placed largely onto the top right corner of the album with a gold plated effect, this indicates wealth & power. the image of the album is a picture of Tyga the artist sitting on a big gold royal chair, ones that you would see kings sitting on but in this case he is the king so he has included the king chair but made it into his vision of a king chair, this was gold and bigger than other chairs. there is the same chair on either sdes of him however these chairs were smaller and empty. this shows that he is the last and only king, this reflects back to the album title.
digi pack research adele
This is an album cover from the artist Adele. they is very little colour on the front cover, she has used a grey scale effect for the whole piece however part of the album name is highlighted green, she most probably wanted this part to stand out after all it is the album name and you want everyone to remember the name. everything else has a grey scale effect, this is because of the songs she has included within the album. The majority of songs she has included are about love broken, loneliness and being unhappy. you could gather this from the image she has included on the front of the album. The front image is a picture of her self looking down with her arms crossed. her facial features and jesters makes her look fed up and hurt.
This is the back cover of her album, this is very much like her front cover of the album cover, howver we see a picture of her staring at the audience. adele still looks sad and fed up but this is the feeeling she wants to give off.
digipack research
This is the front cover of 50 cents front CD cover. as you can see he included him self as the front cover, mid shot of him holding a gun towards the audience. the gin and the clothes he is wearing resembles his lifestyle during the period of his song. if you've heard 50 cents songs, most of them are about guns and living the gangster life. the image he used for his front cover he reflects of the songs he has written for this album
The text style is a stamp like text, this fits into his gangster background. the colour of his name is in red, this indicates blood which reflects to most of his songs.

angel go in go hard ft wretch
I have chosen to analyse 'angel when i go in' music video. this is also the video my group are re-making.
the music video starts of with various 1 second shots then long shots to medium shots to both artists, this is to introduce both artists. there are panning shots of them and camera shots where the camera is free held with a waved motion to the artists, this is because of the rhythm of the song as it is set fast paced. camera shots need to follow the beat. thoughtout out the whole music video, the camera never stops moving, no still shots. the camera moves very freely. there are a lot of panning shots, high and low shots. i would describe the camera shots were all over the place but works very effectively.
the lighting the director used in the music video was natural day lights and stage lights. these were in two different settings, the first one was a stage with flashing stage lights and the second was outside mostly on a roof where there was natural day light.
there were quite a few settings in this music video, firstly the stage. then there was a roof that was reguraly shown. there was also a studio.

music video director
MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTOR
How to be a good music video director?
Writing
it’s
important to learn to write. Having a good sense of story is
invaluable.
Crew Selection
A
small crew travels fast, so use as few crew members as possible. Hire
those that are diverse in their talents and can work several jobs
simultaneously.
Shooting
instruct
the singer to sing properly – no half-hearted singing or, worse,
miming. If they mumble or mime, it will not look right when you lay
the shots against the song, because the tension and movements of the
face and body will not be consistent with the sound of the song. They
must sing as if you were making a real recording of the song.
Organize
On
the day of the shoot be prepared and organized. Keep a record of
shots you’ve made; it’ll make editing much easier. Always allow
plenty of time for shooting – the finished shot may only last 10
seconds, but could easily take several hours to set up and shoot.
When you’re happy with a shot, if you have time, shoot it again.
You can never have too much footage, and the retake may capture
something that you hadn’t noticed first time round. You’ll have
your plan and storyboard to follow, but remember that some of the
best moments in a video can be unplanned.
B-Roll
You
really have two choices when it comes to B-roll for musical
performances. You can mix multiple camera angles and show various
shots of the performer performing, or you can cut away to show shots
of images related to the theme of the song. These related images can
be full-motion video, but they don’t necessarily have to be. Still
photos often work well in music videos. Search old photo albums to
see if the images you want are already there. You can use still
photos to create a video montage, with the music in the background.
Stock Footage
Short-ends
or buy-back (leftover film stock from other shoots) are good ways to
purchase film stock cheap. You can purchase such stock directly from
shoots that are nearing completion or from film, Sometimes Kodak and
Fuji will donate film or give discounts to students and young
film-makers.
Editing
A
nice trick I have used to edit a music video efficiently is to place
all the clips on the timeline, one above the other on
stacked video tracks. They must all be in their correct positions
relative to the song, i.e. they must all be synchronized – except
for the cutaways, which can be placed wherever you like.
Have Fun
When
thinking about making videos, we ask ourselves, what would be fun to
do for a few weeks? That’s where our ideas stem from.
Some
music video directors are:
- Bill Fishman
Julien
Christian Lutz was born in 1975, better known as Little X, X or
Director X, is a canadien music video director He also has his own clothing line X Fit.
Director
X has been noted for his high-budget, visually distinctive music
videos for popular music singles, ncluding videos for R. Kelly, Usher, kayne west, Jay-Z,
Korn, David Guetta, Sean
Paul, Justin Bieber, Drake, Nicki Minajand the Wanted.
